The HR Lawyer within You – Human Resource Strategies for Legal Success - PD Session

Rob Hudson is a member of the labor and employment law group with the firm of Frost Brown Todd and has represented employers in Kentucky for nearly thirty years.  While practicing law, he led Northern Kentucky’s three largest business organizations as their Chairman – NKYSHRM, the Covington Business Council, and the Northern Kentucky Chamber.  Rob has also written several award-winning business books, including a #1 best seller on Amazon.  He has been nominated for Pulitzer Prize for his business columns, is a play write, and has been a frequent guest on Fox News and the Blaze to promote business education for our youth.  Rob’s most recent business book, “The HR Lawyer within You,” won the Great Southeast Book Festival and placed runner up at the Los Angeles Book Festival.  Finally, Mr. Hudson is the author of Kentucky’s labor and employment law reform proposals for the 2017 session of the General Assembly, some of which he will cover in this session.

Every HR professional can begin to problem solve like a management attorney, finding their “HR lawyer within.”  It starts with knowing the terrain.  Complex human resource issues can be like minefields, but with the right map, thinking several steps ahead, nearly any terrain can be safely traversed.  This presentation will identify 25 of the highest risk HR/legal issues, along with HR strategies to address them and achieve legal success.  The presentation begins with the hiring process, covers management fundamentals, then closes with termination issues.

In addition, Mr. Hudson will share information about an upcoming labor and employment law legislative initiative in the Commonwealth of Kentucky, and the HR community’s possible role with respect to this initiative.  Kentucky’s labor and employment laws differ substantially from federal law, imposing confusing, often inconsistent, mandates upon employers.  Many of these inconsistent mandates resulted from simple, uncorrected drafting errors which occurred decades ago.  Others resulted from more laws being placed on the books, without removing old ones.  It’s time for fair, measured reforms to Kentucky’s labor and employment laws.
