Book Overview: Overcoming Bias by Tiffany Jana and Matthew Freeman

Control, Conquer, and Prevail!
Everybody's biased. The truth is, we all harbor unconscious assumptions that can get in the way of our good intentions and keep us from building authentic relationships with people different from ourselves. Tiffany Jana and Matthew Freeman use vivid stories and fun (yes, fun!) exercises and activities to help us reflect on our personal experiences and uncover how our hidden biases are formed. By becoming more self-aware, we can control knee-jerk reactions, conquer fears of the unknown, and prevail over closed-mindedness. In the end, Jana and Freeman's central message is that you are not the problem—but you can be the solution.

Added Bonus! 3 SHRM PDC’s are available for reading the selected book!

Write an essay, featuring how you will apply the content of the book in your workplace or professional life in approximately 500 words (about one page).  Since books are periodically removed from the program, it is important to submit your essay shortly after reading the book to ensure its availability in the program for credit. All editing should be done prior to submitting the essay. Once accepted as “Complete,” the activity is locked. Should editing be necessary at that point, contact books@shrm.org. Register your intentions to obtain PDCs via the SHRM eLearning portal and submit your essay using the same e-mail address on file with SHRM. If your e-mail in eLearning is different from the one in SHRM Certification, you can self-report.   If the SHRM Books Program has questions, they will contact you, including during an audit. Once your essay is accepted, your recertification record will be updated within ten business days.
