Description:

Most HR professionals can relate to the gut-punch moment when a high-performing, well-respected employee announces their departure. While employee turnover is inevitable, regretted turnover is not.

This session reframes exits as one of HR’s most underutilized strategic tools. Rather than treating departures as a compliance task or an uncomfortable conversation, participants will learn how to intentionally collect, interpret, and act on exit data to distinguish acceptable turnover from regretted loss and interpret departures as signals about leadership, systems, and organizational performance that inform business decisions.

Participants will explore how exit data applies across the employee lifecycle, from early departures that surface gaps in hiring or onboarding to long-tenured exits that place institutional knowledge and continuity at risk. The session emphasizes HR’s role in translating exit insights into leadership conversations that drive improvement beyond one individual’s experience.

Participants will gain:

  • A leadership- and research-informed framework to distinguish acceptable turnover from regretted loss.
  • The ability to identify exit insights and KPIs that signal retention risk.
  • Examples of high-impact exit questions and best-practice approaches for conducting effective exit conversations.
  • Practical guidance for using exit data to influence leadership decisions within real organizational constraints.

*Approved for one (1.0) PDCs with SHRM and HRCI.
