DOL’s Wage and Hour Division Announces Overtime Rule Listening Sessions

Yesterday, the U.S. Department of Labor’s (DOL) Wage and Hour Division (WHD) announced it will hold five public listening sessions to gather views on the Fair Labor Standards Act’s white-collar exemption regulations (also known as the “Overtime Rule”). The Federal Register notice asks for the public’s input on the following four questions related to the salary level test:

      1. What is the appropriate salary level (or range of salary levels) above which the overtime exemptions may apply?

      2. What benefits and costs to employees and employers might accompany an increased salary level?

      3. What is the best methodology to determine an updated salary level?

      4. Should the department more regularly update the standard salary level and the total-annual-compensation level for highly compensated employees?

The five listening sessions will occur throughout the country and will begin on September 7 in Atlanta, Georgia. You can find a full list of locations and times and register to attend any event here.

This is the first action DOL has undertaken to update the overtime rule since July 26, 2017, when the department issued a Request for Information (RFI) on the invalidated Obama Administration’s Overtime Rule.

      Central Kentucky Job Club Needs

Sharing of your company job announcements/recruiting needs: We invite BGSHRM members to include the Central Kentucky Job Club when promoting their professional level hiring/recruiting needs. Email the information to Caroline Francis (cfrancis@uky.edu) to be announced at our meeting or attend and present your hiring needs in person. You may attend the entire meeting our just drop in at 10 am and we will give you the floor to share your hiring needs and meet with potential candidates.

Speakers & Panelists: Since we rely upon community volunteer presenters, we need speakers on job searching, interviewing, resume writing, LinkedIn, and professional development topics as well as panelists who could chime in on workplace and employment related topics.

Resume Reviewers: Twice each year we offer free resume critiques. This would be another place where BGSRHM members could be of assistance.

The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) recently awarded Bluegrass Society of Human Resource Management (BGSHRM) its prestigious EXCEL Silver Award for the Chapter’s accomplishments in 2017.

The award aligns individual chapters’ and state councils’ activities with SHRM’s aspirations for the HR profession. The award recognizes accomplishments and strategic activities and initiatives that enhance the human resource profession.

“SHRM exists because of our great chapters and state councils like Bluegrass Society of Human Resource Management which work tirelessly to help advance the important mission of the HR profession through initiatives that support our future, build inclusive organizations and focus on workplace readiness,” said Johnny C. Taylor, Jr., SHRM-SCP, president and chief executive officer of SHRM. “Recognizing you as a recipient of this prestigious award is just one way to show that SHRM supports you and that we are by your side step by step as we move Together Forward.”

The EXCEL Award can be earned at four levels: bronze, silver, gold and platinum. Each level has a prescribed set of requirements and accomplishments that must be met. Bluegrass Society of Human Resource Management will receive recognition in SHRM publications and at conferences, a logo to display on its website, and information to share with its members about the significance of this award.
